Established in 2022 as the Vernon Street Dog Contest, this event stands, as far as we know, as America's pioneering street-based Dog Contest, dedicated to uncovering the ultimate champion—the Best Dog! Due to its significant expansion and the broadening of its community reach, the contest has been aptly renamed to "The Lake Merritt Dog Contest." This change reflects its evolution from a local street event to a more inclusive, global celebration that transcends the original boundaries of Vernon Street. Much like how the Westminster Dog Show welcomes contenders from diverse locales, The Lake Merritt Dog Contest unites a community deeply devoted to their furry companions, celebrating the unique bond between dogs and their owners.

While seeking the title of "best dog," every participant radiates their own brilliance. Each pet earns esteemed recognition, celebrating their distinctive charm and charisma, from their dazzling smiles to unique styles—we are here to celebrate all things DOG! The Lake Merritt Dog Contest is a testament to the world’s visionary dogs, cutest leaders, and exemplary canine citizens. Awards include Most Reliable, Best Silly Boy, and overall Excellence in Style, among others, highlighting the diverse talents and qualities that make each dog special.

As the largest and most influential Dog Contest in Oakland and potentially beyond, the Lake Merritt Dog Contest represents dogs of every size and type around Lake Merritt and across the globe. Acting on our mission to celebrate all things DOG, the Contest recognizes many aspects that make each dog unique, and each year provides a platform to show off those great dogs!
